Many people often ask what is an INTERNIST or a PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN. Internists spend a lot of time learning about chronic diseases and their management, particularly in elderly patients and with many patients wwith co-existing illnesses.
Internal medicine physicians, or internists as we are also know (not to be confused with 'interns') , are specialist physicans that apply their scientific knowledge and clinical expertise in the treatment, diagnosis, and continuing care of adults, many with co-existing conditions.
This can be across the full spectrum and can cover anythibg from general health to patients with complex illness. Primary care doctors are especially well trained in diagnosing puzzling medical conditions and in the ongoing treatment of chronic illnesses. They are also involved in the treatment of patients that often have more than one disease.
Internists and primary care doctors are also specialized in promoting health and well being and in disease prevention.
They routinely see patients that have conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and chronic lung disease. An internist or primary care physicians may consult with a doctor in other fields of medicine, or may be called to consult on a patient by another specialist.
