Blood and Urine Pregnancy Testing
Home/Blood and Urine Pregnancy Testing

A pregnancy test measures a hormone in the urine (pee) called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). HCG is a hormone produced during pregnancy.
The test is about 97-99% accurate, and only takes a few minutes.

A blood test can detect pregnancy 7-12 days after possible conception, sooner than a urine test. The disadvantage is that it is more expensive than a urine test and it takes longer to get the actual results.

When should I get a pregnancy test?

A pregnancy test is most accurate when done a few days past when you were expecting your period.
If you are experiencing any secondary symptoms of pregnancy such as nausea, breast tenderness and extreme tiredness (fatigue), it is a good idea to do a test.
The best time to do a test is in the morning with your first pee of the day. This is because the HCG hormone is most concentrated at that time.
When in doubt, test!

When can I get a pregnancy test?

A negative result means you are unlikely to be pregnant.
Sometimes it means you have taken the test too early. Wait until a few days after a missed period and take another test.
If you’re not pregnant, now is a good time to think about Birth Control Options

What if the test is positive

There are three pregnancy options:

Continue with the pregnancy and become a parent
Continue with the pregnancy and give the baby up for adoption
End the pregnancy now and have a therapeutic abortion
None of the three options is better than the other. Every person needs to make the decision that is right for them.
