A pregnancy test measures a hormone in the urine (pee) called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). HCG is a hormone produced during pregnancy.
The test is about 97-99% accurate, and only takes a few minutes.
A blood test can detect pregnancy 7-12 days after possible conception, sooner than a urine test. The disadvantage is that it is more expensive than a urine test and it takes longer to get the actual results.
When should I get a pregnancy test?
A pregnancy test is most accurate when done a few days past when you were expecting your period.
If you are experiencing any secondary symptoms of pregnancy such as nausea, breast tenderness and extreme tiredness (fatigue), it is a good idea to do a test.
The best time to do a test is in the morning with your first pee of the day. This is because the HCG hormone is most concentrated at that time.
